PAC/LAC is proud to help health care professionals
by crafting and publishing two Guidelines of Care
(Prenatal and Intrapartum Guidelines; Neonatal
Guidelines). The Guidelines of Care
create a platform for risk-appropriate care by
recommending triaging of pregnant women and critically
ill newborns via consultation, referral and transport
to higher level of care providers and facilities
when necessary as dictated by health care needs.
These manuals are a staple locally and serve in
part as a template for facilities in developing
hospital-specific policies and procedures.
The Perfect Reference – These manuals can be used by all facilities regardless of level of care. The capabilities and competency of individual providers and hospitals in conjunction with the level of risk of patient populations will determine the extent to which this manual is used and the degree to which it may require modification. These Guidelines of Care are not intended to dictate practice but are to be used as a foundation for constructing policies and procedures. This manual is appropriately named Guidelines to emphasize that the information provided is not intended to serve as a standard of practice.
Regionalization: Caring for the Right Patients – An important premise of the Guidelines of Care is that a perinatal regionalization system be maintained. This system must include consultation, referral and transport of high-risk patients to risk -appropriate care providers, services and facilities. Knowing the community and being linked to providers and facilities that offer outreach and education to enhance practice is a part of the perinatal regionalization system. PAC/LAC supports and promotes this system of care and is available to serve as a linkage on your behalf. Knowing what you know, knowing what you don’t know and knowing where to go for assistance is the cornerstone of providing quality care services.
Information is Evidence-Based – Every effort has been made to insure accuracy, consistency and timeliness of inclusions. Again, we stress these are guidelines for practice, not standards. All recommendations are supported by current research studies and by national organizations such as the American Academy of Pediatrics.
