Calculating Continuing Education Credits
Please
refer to the following formula explanations to
calculate the requested continuing education credits
for your joint-sponsorship event.
The Board of Registered Nursing recognizes a
50-minute credit hour. To calculate the
number of credit hours for CEUs (Nurses):
- Determine the total number of educational/instructional
minutes for your event. This does not
include meals or breaks.
- Divide the total educational minutes by 50.
- Round down to the nearest 1/2 credit.
For example, if your program were
from 9 AM - 5 PM, with two 15-minute breaks,
and one hour for lunch, it would total 6 ½
instructional hours (390 minutes). Divide
that total by 50 minutes and round down to the
nearest 1/2 credit to determine that you can offer
7.5 CEUs.
The California Medical Association recognizes
a 60-minute credit hour. To calculate the
number of credit hours for CMEs (Physicians),
use the same formula as above, but divide by 60.
In this instance, 390 instructional minutes divided
by 60 equals 6.5 CMEs.

Cultural and Linguistic Competency Requirements
As a result of Assembly Bill 1195 (Continuing
Education: Cultural and Linguistic Competency),
which went into effect on July 1, 2006, all continuing
medical education courses must now contain curriculum
that includes cultural and linguistic competency
in the practice of medicine. California-based
providers planning courses within the State of
California must comply with this law.
**This law specifically applies to CME granting
courses (physician credits), NOT CEU, or nursing
credits.
Exemption:
A continuing medical education course dedicated
solely to research or other issues that does not
include a direct patient care component is not
required to contain curriculum that includes cultural
and linguistic competency in the practice of medicine.
All other courses are considered nonexempt.
Expectations:
The IMQ/CMA expects that accredited providers
will make a good-faith effort to comply with Assembly
Bill 1195. When developing CME activities, it
is important to assess the need for cultural and
linguistic competency issues as suitable to each
educational subject. Not all issues will apply
to all CME activities. IMQ/CMA does expect, however,
some evidence that the provider has made an effort
to incorporate appropriate cultural and linguistic
competency topics into the educational content
of CME activities.
Resources:
For resources on integrating cultural and linguistic
competency elements into CME activities please
